We are delighted to be working with the ever-growing Salar, a company which takes pride in producing the highest level of product for their customers. Not only is their flaky salmon fantastic, but their company ethos is also admirable. That’s right, the team at Salar Smokehouse have created a stunning combination of our island spirit infused onto the most delicious salmon. “Salar Smokehouse opened as a small business in South Uist in about 1997, with the original owner designing and building his own unique kilns.
We are fortunate to be located in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt locations in the world where community and culture are still prominent. On a daily basis we are surrounded by fantastic scenery, an abundance of wild life, including sea eagles, otters, and wild deer.
Our award-winning Flaky Smoked Salmon has won numerous awards since it was first produced on the premises and we aim to continue to build on past successes. Salar won the New Business at the Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Awards 2017 and also the Young Shining Star Award for Donald Maclachlan (Head Smoker) who at 19 years excels in all his work.
In 2015 the opportunity arose for the company to be purchased by Iain MacRury who will continue the legacy with a back to basics approach and the relaunching of the famous Salar brand.
Today Salar employs a team of 6 dedicated and highly skilled local people all year round and also employs seasonal staff during peak times throughout the year. The high standard and quality of our original Flaky product enjoyed worldwide is a testament to the dedication and skills of our team who are all multi-skilled and take pride in producing only the finest quality smoked salmon to offer the ultimate customer experience.
Our team is also dedicated to new product development to offer a further range of exciting new unique recipes to our customers.
Produced in small batches, the distinctive flavour and texture of our Flaky salmon is different to any other hot smoked products due to the unique hand-built kilns and treasured recipe. Our smoked cooked salmon retains all the natural omega 3 oils and nutrients and produces the succulent but firm Flaky texture which only Flaky Smoked Salmon can provide.
We source only the highest quality Atlantic salmon (Salmo Salar) from Scottish salmon producers which is reared in the clear waters off the coast of Scotland.
Our processes are simple and old fashioned in a way, handmade throughout the process, ensuring each portion of our smoked salmon is handled with pride and quality. It takes years of experience and patience to master this process, one that cannot be rushed.”
