It’s always spoken of, always the aim and is extremely important that we all play our part in sustaining our planet. So how are we contributing to sustainability? Well let’s dive right in and share this information with you!

Aside from the love we have of Barra, we are also blessed to obtain and sustain our key botanical from the shores of our island home. Carrageen seaweed, which grows naturally on the coast of Barra is hand-harvested and prepared at a sustainable pace before playing the all-important role of our key botanical in our Barra Atlantic Gin.

Harvested after the spring tide, the Carrageen is collected by hand and left outdoors to dry by the sun and the wind. We’re proud to use zero machinery during this process and even more pleased to harvest just 30-40 percent of one area each time and continually rotate our harvesting areas to allow regrowth in a bid to sustain this species of seaweed for the future.
Another botanical used in our Barra Atlantic Gin, that grows wild on the island is heather. We are also pleased to hand-harvest this botanical as and when required. With an abundance of heather growing wild on our island home, it would be rude not to include this as a botanical in our island spirit.
The riches on our doorstep are endless and have cause to create unique opportunities. It is our responsibility to sustain these ingredients whilst utilising their benefits and flavours to our Gin.

Fully recyclable, our cardboard packaging, paper tape and signature marble paper that our bottle arrives wrapped in, can all be popped into your recycling bin. We’re delighted to be contributing to sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions throughout our packaging.
Plastic free, we’re utilising cardboard and paper where possible as we strive to be eco-friendly.
Our glass bottle is recyclable and slick with a simple glass base. And we’re pleased to report that our labels are plastic free too.

Every bottle of our Barra Atlantic Gin is packaged by hand, using a limited volume of machinery within our distillery.
Our chosen method of delivery enables our shipments to leave only a small carbon footprint throughout its extensive journey from us to you. As our mail travels via road, ferry and flight we are utilising existing methods of public transport links to have our mail travel to the mainland and beyond.
The journey of our mail from the Isle of Barra:
By ferry from Barra > Eriskay (our northern neighbours)

From Eriskay > Benbecula after passing through South Uist

Sorted in the Post Office of Benbecula

Jets off on a flight from Benbecula > Stornoway

From Stornoway > Inverness where it is distributed to its correct sorting office
So, in total before our mail even lands into a sorting office on the mainland it has passed through 5 different Islands. So, when there are cancellations to ferry and flights due to poor weather our mail gets backed up along the way. It doesn't happen often but sometimes it does, it is simply one of the factors we need to take into consideration when living on the edge of the Atlantic.
