The journey of our Island Spirit!

The journey of our Island Spirit!

We are delighted to be able to send a little bit of Barra to your home, wherever it may be during this unprecedented time. As most of you will know, our Island Home is in a remote location off the West Coast of Scotland and to say your bottle of Barra Atlantic Gin is fair travelled before it arrives at your door, is an understatement.

Due to our Distilleries location, our shipments can vary due to many factors out with our control. Taking weather into consideration or the weight the airline it travels on can allow, it determines whether your parcel makes it off the Islands that day or not.

We’re always sharing our story with you but this time we’d like to share our delivery with you.

Our Island Spirit is distilled, botted, labelled and packaged in our Distillery located in Castlebay Business Estate, Isle of Barra. Once our Gin has found a welcoming home to go to, we take our Royal Mail bags filled with boxes of our Island Spirit to our local post office by van, over half a mile away where is awaits collection from our local post officers.

Once collected by the local ‘postie’ our Gin is loaded into the back of a Royal Mail van and driven over 9 miles to the North of the Island to an area called Ardmhor. The Calmac Ferry service takes our shipments on a scenic crossing of just 40 minutes to the Island of Eriskay.

From Eriskay, the goods then travel across the causeway to the Isle of South Uist followed by another causeway to the Isle of Benbecula where the parcels are sorted in Balivanich Post Office before it’s flight to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.

From here, our Island Spirit boards another flight from Stornoway Airport to Inverness Airport where it is then transported to Glasgow’s Royal Mail Centre to be sorted and distributed across the UK, where you will receive it from your local Post Officer.

Now that’s a lot of Island Hopping for our Gin with a staggering total of 5 Islands travelled in order to have your package delivered to your door. It’s a similar case to the known saying of “trains, planes and automobiles” …although we’d need to switch the train for the ferry!

Of course, we can’t keep tabs on what happens exactly to our Island Spirit once it reaches your home, however we have a fair idea and reckon it’s along the lines of the following;

Instantly crack the bottle open (it's 5 o'clock somewhere!)
Pour a healthy measure with the addition of garnish and tonic water
Drink the G&T
Repeat until EMPTY!

So, there you have it, the wonderful story of how our Barra Atlantic Gin reaches your home from our Distillery on the Isle of Barra!

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers for supporting our small team over the past few weeks and for the incredible patience and understanding of all you lovely people out there!

We hope you are safe and well, wherever you may be and hope that our Island Spirit brings you a little piece of happiness during a not so certain time.

With love from all at the Isle of Barra Distillers.
