Rising from the Atlantic on Scotland’s far western edge lies our home, the Isle of Barra.

It’s the same vast ocean our brave ancestors once crossed, and the place that continues to shape who we are. Though life took us away for a time, the call of home was stronger. Guided by a fearless spirit, we returned; to raise a family, to reconnect with our roots, and to build Scotland’s most westerly distillery. Every bottle we craft is distilled and bottled on the island, carrying a piece of Barra with it.

OUR STORY

Hi - we’re Michael and Katie! What a pleasure it is to have you here.

We’re incredibly lucky to have been born and raised here on the Isle of Barra. A place that shapes you in ways you only truly understand once you’ve left it. Growing up here teaches you the value of hard work, resilience and community. Earning a living from both land and sea, and knowing that everyone looks out for one another. Those connections stay with you for life.

Like many islanders, we spent some time away from home. As we moved from youth into adulthood, we spent nine years living in Glasgow. We loved the buzz of city life and the opportunities it brought, but no matter how far we went, Barra was always calling us home. We knew we wanted to return to raise a family, to build something meaningful, and to create opportunities that would encourage islanders to stay and thrive.

OUR STORY

That calling led us back home, and from it, Isle of Barra Distillers was born. A distillery rooted in our island, inspired by its landscape and culture, and built with the hope of putting Barra firmly on the map - while staying true to everything that makes it special.

Back in 2017, we sold our very first bottle of Barra Gin - a launch so exciting our website actually crashed under the weight of orders coming through! That moment marked the beginning of something we could never have imagined would grow into what it is today, and we remain incredibly grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey from the very start.

From that first bottle, we’ve grown into a full range of island-crafted spirits, always rooted in Barra, its people and its landscape. And now, one of our biggest dreams is becoming a reality - the creation of Barra’s very first legal single malt whisky distillery.

Since our first batch of gin in 2017, Isle of Barra Distillers has remained proudly family-run, with both family and the island of Barra at the heart of everything we do.

Today, our team has grown to 12, but our mission remains the same: to build a lasting legacy, not just for our generation, but for the generations to come.
